For businesses, Facebook is a place to share photos, updates, and general news with those who follow or “like” you. Fans of your business come to your Facebook page to find out what’s going on with your company, see pictures of what’s going on, or explore events.
They help make sure your advertising budget isn’t wasted on those who aren’t really interested in what you’re offering and helping to put product or service put into the hands of the exact person who wants or needs it.
The most popular social networks usually display a high number of user accounts or strong user engagement. For example, market leader Facebook was the first social network to surpass 1 billion monthly active users, whereas recent newcomer Pinterest was the fastest independently launched site to reach 10 million unique monthly visitors. The majority of social networks with more than 100 million users originated in the United States, but European services like VK or Chinese social networks Qzone and Renren have also garnered mainstream appeal in their areas due to local context and content.
The leading social networks are usually available in multiple languages and enable users to connect with friends or people across geographical, political or economic borders. Approximately 2 billion internet users are using social networks and these figures are still expected to grow as mobile device usage and mobile social networks increasingly gain traction.
5. It’s Launching Promoted Posts
If you are already an ad words user this is going to be a big deal for you. Google Plus is launching +post ads, which are basically promoted posts. They will be connected to ad words and will display your content outside of the G+ network on Google Display Ad sites. So, before you decide to leave Facebook all together, know this.
But is it a social network? The answer is obviously yes, if you want to use it as such. It has social networking features (much better functionality than Facebook, in my opinion), you can manage lists of people and you can communicate easily with those people within the platform or via Gmail.

In another post from Trendstream, Google is compared to Facebook’s new Graph Search. Its data indicate a marked decline in the percent of Facebook users who are actively sharing information about their daily lives—a significant source of data for Graph Search. GWI observes that, “Growth of active usage is concentrated in passive or frictionless sharing actions and behaviours, like “purchasing a product or service” or watching a TV show or film, which have grown massively through 2012.” The post concludes that, ” The future of social is far more passive, less about interacting with friends and more about watching or utilizing the social data to navigate and discover the web as well as the world around us. This means the data will not be user contributed but, aggregated about the user. This leaves Google with the upper hand (italics mine).”
A report by UK market research firm Trendstream updated its Global Web Index this week which showed how well Google’s strategy is working in terms of getting users engaged in its social networks. According to GWI, Google+ is now the second largest social network in terms of active users and YouTube, included for the first time in its index is now third. The report estimates Facebook’s active users in December 2012 at 693 million, compared to 343 million for Google+. The post does not break out the number of YouTube active users, but from the chart it appears to be approximately 280 million.
